FAQs - HOUSE NUMBERING
WHY DO I NEED A NEW HOUSE NUMBER?
The adoption of house numbering follows specific rules (Regulation no.39/2016). These rules are recognized and used at a national and European level by emergency, civil protection, and mail services, allowing shorter response times.
WHO PLACES THE HOUSE NUMBERS?
Infraquinta will place the house numbers on the facade or visible place next to the front gate of the house. Infraquinta will try to contact its clients whenever possible so they may indicate where to place the house number. However, if you wish to choose the location of the house number in advance, you should contact Infraquinta via e-mail (info@infraquinta.pt) or via telephone (289390030).
The removal of the plot number is not mandatory and is the responsibility of the owner.
It is recommended that there be a transition period in which the two numbers coexist for as long as the owner does not change the address.
WHAT DOES THAT ENTAIL?
In case you have permanent housing, you must change the address in all personal documentation, the urban building, and other documents that include your old address.
If it is a holiday home, you only have to go to the Tax Office and the Land Registry Office to update the address of the urban building.
PERMANENT RESIDENT?
In case all your personal documentation has the address of the urban building in question, you are a permanent resident.
You must request Loulé City Hall for a Toponymic Certificate through the following hyperlink:http://portalmunicipe.cm-loule.pt/formulario/6386/minuta-de-certidao-de-toponimia.aspx , or go to Infraquinta’s offices.
The toponymic certificate makes the change of address free of cost and must be submitted to the competent authorities, with the exception of the change of the Citizen Card in person, which costs 3€.
HOW TO REPORT MY NEW ADDRESS?
Before the change, the address consisted of the plot number and the area.
At the moment, the communication of the address must contain the name of the street, the house number and the area.
ARE THERE REPEATED HOUSE NUMBERS IN MY AREA?
House numbering follows a set of rules:
The numbering starts at the entrance of each street and proceeds sequentially and incrementally;
In general, the odd numbers are placed on the left side of the street, and the even numbers on the right side.
If your area consists of more than one street, it is normal for repeated house numbers to exist. For this reason, the importance of including the name of the street in the report of the address to the competent authorities is emphasized.

If the intention is to find Plot 10 in Suburb X, and despite the lack of definition of the suburb’s boundaries, assuming that we are in said suburb in front of Plot 1, we do not know if we are near or far from Plot 10, if we should search on that side of the road, or if the investigation should proceed to left or to the right.
I HAVE THE NEW NUMBER PLACED. WHAT ADDRESS SHOULD I REPORT?
If you have already made the change of address through the competent authorities, you must report the new address. If you have not already done so, you must report your old address (plot number and area), except in the case of contact with emergency services.
It should be noted that the emergency services have already been informed of the changes in the addresses, and that these have already been included in their databases.
